Castles Are Boring
Some emergency had called The Prince and Del away or so she was informed, so Jade spent countless hours exploring the castle, but still had only explored about half of it. So far, the art gallery and the library were her sort of favorite rooms, besides her very favorite room which was the kitchen.
She followed the aroma of fresh baked bread to find the room of her dreams. It was where all the delicious things she had been enjoying for several days came from. Once inside, she found a squat, green creature that slightly resembled a frog. She had bulging eyes and a kind demeanor, but not at all what Jade had expected from a cook. At first she recoiled from the idea of eating something from this amphibianâs kitchen. It did shock her for a moment but she realized that she had been eating her cooking for many days, and not only did she find herself in good health, but the food was all delicious.
âWell hello dear, and who might you be?â asked the cook, and it took her aback for a moment because she certainly didnât expect the frog creature to speak.
âIâm Jade,â she replied, âand I am prisoner here.â
âPrisoner is it? Is it a prisoner that I have been making all the bread and water for?â She satirically gestured at all the piles of eclairs and cinnamon buns that Jade had been gobbling down for the last several days.
Jade was abashed, realizing how dramatic she sounded, âWell, maybe like an enforced guest.â
âHmmm, Burrrrrrble,â the being croaked, surprising Jade, âThat sounds more reasonable dearie, and how do you find the food? And hand me that pot.â
The creature was busily bustling around and clearly meant to be obeyed. She was adding something to another pot, stirring furiously.
Jade found herself reaching for a copper pot, âIt is wonderful. It is the best Iâve ever had.â
The frog-woman appeared to preen, and gloat, until Jade asked, âIs all the food in Nephthysia this good?â
The green turned almost a shade of purple which Jade would later find was frustration and anger, as she found the pot snapped from her hand, the thing replied, âMost certainly not! Do you think they let just anyone serve at one of the high castles?â
Jade felt bad. She had clearly offended the cook, and that was not a position that someone who enjoyed eating so much wanted to find herself in, âNo, of course not, I am so sorry. I am not from here, you see, so I donât know anything about that.â
âOf course you donât,â the creature was returning to green in color, âwhere are you from? You have the look of a Terranian.â
âI am from Earth,â she replied uncertainly, âI mean, at least that was where I was raised.â
The creature appeared to choke for a moment, but Jade later realized it was laughter, as it stated, âWell you certainly cannot be expected to know anything then.â
She then went on to introduce herself, proclaiming her name to be a string of croaks, and grunts that Jade had no possibility of being able to pronounce.
